Yangtze River Chinoiserie Floor Lamp
#1760
SOLD
A beautifully ornate antique floor lamp with an ornamental break has been hand painted and holds a hand-dyed Yangtze River Chinoiserie silk lampshade. This shade is ombré dyed from dusty blue to deep cinnabar red and has a shadowbox on one side that features an exquisite antique silk pictorial appliqué of a Chinese river scene with a beautiful woman, flowers and a bird. The surrounding frame of the shadowbox is covered with hand-dyed variegated devoré velvet from the 1920s. The shade is covered on the back and on both sides with quintessential classic blue and white antique Chinese embroidered motifs (peonies, butterflies, leaves and buds) that replicate the traditional blue-and-white ceramics of that culture.
“Originally invented in China [and first appearing in the Tang dynasty (618 – 906)] blue-and-white ceramics were widely circulated, copied and re-created by makers worldwide... and by the late 19th century blue-and-white had become an essential element of the 'house beautiful', with sideboards and cabinets being designed specifically for the elegant display of ceramics in the home.” (Source: Victoria and Albert Museum)
Rare French gold metallic netting overlays the large panels giving a beautiful shimmer to this stately shade.
The shade has extra long dramatic hand beaded fringe in beautiful jewel tones. A beaded pull chain adorns and illuminates the lamp. An antique 1920s era finial with Czech glass tops the piece. This is an exotic beauty.
Overall height is 66.5 inches to the top of the finial.
Shade dimensions are approximately 16 x 11 inches.
